The narrator jumps from one character to another like a dog traipsing through a meadow: curiously smelling everything it sees with its head in the clouds having little to no care about anything else. ![]() Addressing the narration, it becomes quite tedious as you go through the novel. So incidentally did anybody who might have suggested that readers did not want to share in a joke about his father's testicles. Referencing a post-presidential excursion with his persnickety dog, Barney, Bush writes, "There I was, the former president of the United States, with a plastic bag in my hand, picking up that which I had been dodging for the past eight years." If anyone tried to persuade Bush that this might not be the most dignified ending for his memoir-a former president literally in "deep doo-doo," to quote one of his father's most well-known quips-they obviously lost. He recites the line again-one of the last lines of his memoir, the image that readers will take away. ![]() His advisers-which for this project include Dana Perino, Condoleezza Rice, and former chief of staff Josh Bolten-are awarded a skeptical glance from behind the half-glasses perched on his nose. His affairs with several women, including Eleonora Duse and Luisa Casati, received public attention.ĭuring the First World War, the perception of D'Annunzio in Italy transformed from a literary figure into a national war hero. He came under the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche which would find outlets in his literary and later political contributions. This is a novel mystifyingly overlooked by Virginia Woolf in her 1926 essay On Being Ill, in which she bemoans literature's failure to make illness one of its "prime themes" alongside "love and battle and jealousy." Well, here illness is decidedly centre-stage, and the plot – what there is of it – almost incidental: Hans Castorp, a naive young engineer, travels to the International Sanatorium Berghof high up in the Swiss Alps to visit his ailing cousin, Joachim Ziemssen. ![]() ![]() Set in a tuberculosis sanatorium during the years immediately prior to the Great War, this book is many things: a modernist classic, a traditional bildungsroman, a comedy of manners, an allegory of pre-war bourgeois Europe, and – perhaps most importantly this time of year – the ideal book to keep you company on the long winter nights, when whichever flu bug is doing the rounds has gained the upper hand and forced you into a sneezing retreat to your sickbed.įor The Magic Mountain is a work of sick-lit par excellence: a novel that convincingly portrays illness as a state of mind as well as of body (though Mann does not shy away from the more visceral aspects of the latter). Buddenbrooks may be the precociously brilliant debut, Death in Venice the small-but-perfectly-formed novella, but for me, Mann's real masterpiece is his sprawling snowbound epic of 1924, The Magic Mountain. ![]() |
